PORTSIDE BOULDERS

PERTH, AUSTRALIA

"We have worked with Michelle for a number of Portside Boulders projects over the past 4 years and could not recommend her more highly.

Across each project, Michelle has effortlessly translated our vision for the sport and prospective facility into aesthetically pleasing wall designs which have proven themselves as inspiring terrain for setters to create movement on. Her experience as a wall designer, climber and architectural designer combined with her artistic flair have also ensured our gyms stand out from the rest.

Further to the above, Michelle is receptive to feedback, professional and prompt in her replies making collaboration a breeze!" Ferdinand Renouard Lariviere (Portside Boulders, Perth, Australia)

AVID CLIMBING

IPSWICH, UK

"It was clear from the start that Michelle at Tectonica really understood our requirements. This wasn’t just another wall designer, she refined and listened carefully and came up with innovative solutions and ideas in order to make the most of the space available while also embracing the aesthetic element. The Top out area and the glass walkway through to the calming Bird Boulder remain a key element of the Avid wall design. Michelle works with sensitivity and commercial awareness which is quite a skill. Would highly recommend her work" - Lindsay Barker (Avid Climbing, Ipswich, UK)

URBAN CLIMB

AUSTRALIA

"Michelle isn't prescriptive, in each and every project she seeks to understand the area, the community and other elements that we hold in high importance before commencing design. As a result, in addition to smart, safe wall design, the final form is always  supported or reflective of our community, higher themes or important local stories. "

ABOUT

Tectonica Design Lab is a UK-based design studio specialising in the creation of bespoke climbing gyms.

Founded in 2017, and led by Michelle Wardle, the studio is recognised for its innovative designs that seamlessly blend architectural creativity with the practical needs of climbers. Michelle brings a rare combination of architectural expertise and hands-on climbing experience to her work. She holds a Master’s in Architecture and has worked on large-scale commercial architectural projects in multiple countries, giving her a strong foundation in design at every scale.

During her studies, Michelle also worked as a duty manager and climbing instructor at her university’s climbing wall, deepening her understanding of climbing from both a user and operational perspective.

Her extensive on-site experience ensures that her creative concepts are not only inspiring but also practical and buildable. A standout example of this is her work on the award-winning Cuningar Loop Boulder Park in Scotland (2014), where she played a vital role in both the design and the on-site sculpting and management of the boulders as part of the winning design-build team.

Design Philosophy

With a holistic, climber-led approach, Tectonica Design Lab tailors each project to reflect the unique identity and vision of its client. The studio values sustainability, inclusivity, and creativity—pushing the boundaries of climbing space design while delivering functional and inspiring environments.
